HUDSON, Fla. – A spine surgeon who has completed nearly 80,000 procedures says that migraines, which affect up to 15 percent of the population, can be a product of neck pain.
According to a study published in the Journal of Head and Face Pain, 89 percent of people who have migraines, either episodic or chronic, have neck pain, suggesting a strong correlation between the two.
Another study found that not only are neck pain and migraines connected, but that when the subjects of the study were diagnosed with chronic neck pain, they began to experience chronic migraines for the first time.
The bones of the spinal column in the neck are referred to as the cervical spine. The cervical spine consists of the first seven vertebrae (C1-C7) of the spinal column.
Alfred Bonati, M.D., is a spine surgeon and the founder of the Bonati Spine Institute. He says there has long been a correlation between migraines and chronic neck pain, and that while some of the reasons are obvious and well-recognized, others may be hiding in plain sight.
“We know that nerve compression can cause radiculopathy, which also can cause headaches,” Dr. Bonati said. “If you have symptomology in the C-5 and C-6 intervertebral space, that can trigger headaches.”
The Bonati Spine Institute has completed about 80,000 successful spinal and neck procedures, with a 98 percent patient-reported satisfaction rate.
Dr. Bonati, whose patented surgical method requires only local anesthesia and conscious IV sedation, says that there is a connection between neck pain and migraines that should be discussed more thoroughly, and that he has observed the relief of headaches after cervical spine surgery throughout his entire surgical career.
“As much as many doctors and drug companies don’t want to admit it,” Dr. Bonati said, “the overuse of analgesics for neck pain can also cause migraine headaches. If we are we are overusing pain medications for several days, that medication may cause rebound headaches as side effect, which can complicate the issue. My suggestion is always to find the root cause of the neck pain and have that corrected in order to avoid causing more problems.”
Dr. Bonati has been treating patients with chronic neck pain for nearly 40 years. His patients, who come from across the world for his expertise and many of whom have such crippling conditions that they are prevented from living a normal life. After Dr. Bonati’s patented minimally invasive procedures, most patients are able to walk out of the Bonati Spine Institute cured of their pain.
