University celebrates same ‘milestone’ spinal surgery technique Tampa-area spine center has been practicing for nearly 40 years

HUDSON, Fla. – A university in Oregon recently celebrated what it called a “milestone” in minimally invasive spinal surgery, despite a Florida spine center using a similar technique for nearly 40 years.

The Oregon University of Health & Science (OHSU) said in December that doctors there completed their first spine surgery without the use of general anesthesia, meaning that the patient was awake during the procedure.

Instead of being fully anesthetized, OHSU says the patient was instead given a local anesthetic, and could communicate with doctors during the procedure.

However, while the procedure was billed as a “milestone” on the west coast, the practice of keeping the patient awake and communicative while using conscious sedation has been practiced by the Bonati Spine Institute in the Tampa Bay area for decades.

In the 1980s, Alfred O. Bonati, M.D. of the Bonati Spine Institute revolutionized the medical industry with his patented minimally invasive spinal procedures and patented surgical tools while employing a conscious sedation technique. Since then, Dr. Bonati, and other surgeons at the Bonati Spine Institute, use Dr. Bonati’s patented technique and tools, and keep their patients awake and communicative throughout their procedures.

To date, the Bonati Spine Institute has completed nearly 80,000 procedures and has a higher than 98 percent patient-reported satisfaction rate.

Patients seen by spine experts at the Bonati Spine Institute typically walk out of the Tampa area spine surgery center with their chronic back pain relieved after less than an hour of recovery time. In many instances, Dr. Bonati’s patients have suffered such debilitating chronic back pain that it has stopped them from working and significantly decreased their quality of life.

“The practice of keeping a patient awake and communicating throughout the procedure, like what was recently accomplished in Oregon, is a great step for treating patients with chronic back pain, which is why we’ve been performing those types of procedures for decades at my practice,” said Dr. Bonati. “In that time, we have been ridiculed by many in the medical establishment for our innovative and truly minimally invasive surgical technique. It’s nice to finally see some universities celebrating the successes of the similar practice we have utilized for tens of thousands of patients, which has led to happier patients, seeing successful results, leading more active lives than they could have imagined.”

Dr. Bonati says relief from chronic back pain can be achieved easily at The Bonati Spine Institute.

“While the government-funded universities continue to study minimally invasive techniques, we are ready and waiting to alleviate chronic back pain for our patients,” Dr. Bonati said. “We have already perfected this technique, and I am happy to invite anyone who is curious about my procedure to come watch me perform it. I think you’ll be amazed with what you see.”
